Fly Casting Education Program (FCEP)

  About FCEP

Welcome to the Fly Casting Education Program (FCEP)! Regardless of your casting skill level, FCEP has something for you. From beginner to advanced, whether looking to learn and improve or become a certified casting instructor, FCEP has a path forward for you. Our website has a wealth of information, including articles and videos, and our certified instructors have the training and teaching skills to take your casting to the next level. They strive for excellence in casting instruction so the angler can expect to learn new skills in a welcoming, fun environment.

In September of 2023, the Fly Casting Education Program was launched to build on the work of the Casting Board of Governors. The structure built into FCEP was derived through extensive planning and effort and emphasizes two functions of equal importance: teaching fly casting to FFI members and non-members, and training instructors for FFI certification. The Angler Casting Education component supports casting instruction for fly fishers of all skill levels. The Casting Instructor Education component encompasses the pre-existing Casting Instructor Certification Program and more robust support for certification preparation and instructor development, before and after certification. These two components of the FCEP are linked through the emphasis on teaching, continued learning, and instructor development. A Leadership Team provides direction and oversight. ANGLER CASTING EDUCATION

Angler Casting Education emphasizes instruction for all flyfishers, beginner to advanced. These efforts support our local instructors with teaching opportunities. Our Fly Casting Skills Development Programs are signature ways of teaching fly casting. As of 2024, there are progressive programs outlined for basic to advanced casting, single hand Spey casting and saltwater casting. These programs, along with organization of present and future video support, teach FFI members in our Councils & Clubs, the fly angling public, and support our certified instructors with exemplary material for students.

CASTING INSTRUCTOR EDUCATION

Casting Instructor Education has its foundation in the Casting Instructor Certification Program (CICP). It is supported by a Casting Instructor Development Program, also known as the “Pipeline,” which seeks to identify and welcome certification candidates, help with matching mentors with candidates and, together with other teams, create new videos, written materials and virtual programs to enhance and streamline the certification journey, and guide candidates to their next level. There will also be ongoing teacher development through continuing education materials. These resources are available to all fly casting instructors, certified or not.

Our Goals

Our goals are to increase the number of certified instructors for both Single and Two Hand Casting, and equally strive to teach more fly anglers basic to advanced casting skills so that they have a more enjoyable fishing experience and come to value casting instruction. This includes increasing casting instruction activities for FFI members and the fly angling public. It is only through excellent teaching and casting skills that an excellent reputation as instructors can be upheld. Over time, our relationship with the fly fishing community and industry will be strengthened, demonstrating our value and maintaining relevance.
Our new approach will only be accomplished by our great volunteers. It would be impossible without them! We need everyone to help make the Fly Casting Education Program grow and prosper as a valued and respected member of the fly fishing community. The FCEP and FFI rely on financial support from memberships and donations.
